Quit Smoking, Chantix and Weight Gain

Chantix is the quit smoking pill developed by Pfizer.

Did you know that Chantix is in fact associated with weight gain and increased appetite? However the weight gain is less that what you may imagine. On average people who take Chantix gain about 2.37 kg (or 5.31 pounds). Five pounds can be lost in about a week of dieting and exercising.

If you are concerned about weight gain while taking Chantix it is a valid concern. Nevertheless, one could argue that the amount of weight gain is insignificant in comparison to the huge benefit derived from quitting smoking. And as mentioned before weight gain can be avoided with a balanced exercise and diet program.

  1. I’m trying to get pregnant and thinking about taking chantix for a couple of months before I attempt to conceive? Will Chantix be out of my system in enough time?

  2. I’m trying to get pregnant and thinking about taking chantix for a couple of months before I attempt to conceive? Will Chantix be out of my system in enough time before I conceive? I’m almost 41, so should I be concerned about trying to conceive so soon after i stop taking the Chantix?

I was on chantix a couple of years ago. I was taking it for one month and was successful with not smoking for the 3 months after I stopped taking the pills until there was a devastating death in my family and i slipped back into the habit. When I was on chantix before I didn’t have any major side affects, except for the vivid dreams for a couple of nights but I got through it.

  3. Dear Charmaine,

This is a difficult question to answer because I can’t assume anything since I am not your personal doctor. It is better to have a baby without smoking of course and to that end I would encourage you to quit.

As far as the risk of using Chantix prior to conceiving is theoretically sound as Chantix should be out of your system in about a week to 10days. But I would encourage you to see your OB/Gyn doctor and discuss these matters with them. You and your doctor can best agree on what is the best way to for you to quit smoking.
