You Would Quit Smoking If You Knew How Much Money Tobacco Companies Made from You

[widget id=”ad_unit-13″]ad_unit-13[/widget]Everyday you smoke you are taking your hard earned money and enriching the tobacco companies.
And they want you to continue smoking so that they can get richer everyday…If this doesn’t make you want to quit I don’t know what will.
I just came from the census.gov site and saw the estimated World and US population. The US is just a small portion of  the whole World population.

U.S. 310,861,002
World 6,886,171,015

(US pop is less than 5% of world pop.)

From a very young age I always enjoyed looking at numbers. I would look at a numbers like these and see things. For example I would see that the world population is about twenty times the population of the United States. Which means that for every twenty people in the world one is an American. And the US represented less than  1/20 (or 4.5% to be exact of the World population).

But then I would see other numbers that would be down right scary. Like the fact that globally 1.3 billion people are current smokers. That is a huge number of people spending money everyday making the tobacco companies richer and richer.

The big three tobacco companies world wide are
  1. Philip Morris,
  2. British American Tobacco (BAT),
  3. Japan Tobacco International (JTI).
Together these three companies represent over 95% of the tobacco sold in the entire world. Philip Morris is the world’s largest transnational tobacco company, whose Marlboro brand is the world leader. In 1999 Philip Morris had sales of over US$47 billion.

Think about this there is about 47 billion seconds in 1,490 years. Look at it another way: if starting from the year Jesus was born someone spent a dollar every minute by 2010 they would still have 45.9 billion dollars left.

  1. Tobacco companies make a hell of a lot of money. Not only do tobacco companies make money, money is also made by governments in the form of taxes on tobacco. Apart from this consider the health costs of tobacco consumption. It is estimated that tobacco consumption leads to a direct cost of billions of dollars every year and many billions more indirectly due to loss of productivity. Considering all this, governments should take a proactive approach to combat tobacco. In this regard the initiatives taken by new york city is commendable. If each of us thinks about the actual harm of smoking we would agree that it is good to quit smoking
