The Other Side of Nicotine Gum

Some medicines have side effects. However, the expectation is that it will give you more relief than side effects. But this may not be the case when it comes to nicotine gums.

Several pieces of nicotine gumNightmares

Some smokers who use nicotine gum as smoking cessation aid would complain of strange dreams and nightmares which sometimes lead to sleep deprivation. Though deeper studies are still required to determine the real reason for this phenomenon, it can be linked to the changes happening inside the body while withdrawing from nicotine, especially in the brain. However, poor sleep can lead to several health problems.

Nausea

Nicotine gum users would also complain of nausea and recurring stomach pains. One possible reason is the high content of nicotine in the gum which puts the body in a shock, resulting to nausea. This is a normal reaction of the body as a response to an overdose similar to that of the body’s response to drinking too much alcohol.

Addiction

Almost everyone would agree that nicotine is highly addictive. Twelve weeks of continuous use of products containing nicotine, such as cigarettes, cigar, chewable tobacco, etc. can lead to addiction and can last for a lifetime. Long time exposure to nicotine can lead to various health problems. Nicotine gums contain the same nicotine only in varied amounts, but the same addiction is present.

Other Health Problems

Nicotine gum is also reported to cause several health issues that are associated to its long term use. Some of the other known common side effects include:

  • Hair loss
  • Teeth loss
  • Poor eyesight
  • Skin complication

Though majority of these health issues remained unverified and lack conclusive studies, it cannot be denied that long term use of nicotine gums can actually cause unwanted side effects.

Nicotine gum is definitely one of the most popular nicotine replacement therapy available in the market today. It also gives you the impression that it is an easy way out of your smoking habit. However, there are several things you need consider before finally deciding to use it such as your personal health history, your required dose, etc.

Side effects are sometimes caused by the wrong use. This is the very reason why you need to consult your physician before starting using nicotine gum or any NRT or drugs for that matter. Your physician can determine the right dosage of nicotine or can advise you of an alternative in case your current health condition does not allow for the usage of any NRT.

There are also some smoking cessation aids such as Chantix that does not use nicotine to help you quit. Ask your doctors for any available options for you other than NRTs.
