5 Programs that Help Young Adults Quit Smoking

It is very common nowadays to see group of college students smoking in campuses and recreational areas. This is a sad reality that is becoming more of a culture. Statistics reveal that an alarming 28% of college students are regular smokers. And what is more alarming is that 48% of college students have used tobacco products. To address this growing concern, several quit smoking programs are being instigated in college campuses throughout the country.

Smoke-Free Campuses

This technique is rather a more aggressive approach, where colleges declare their campuses as a smoke-free Smoking-49918247place. This means students are prohibited to smoke inside these campuses, making it inconvenient for students to light up, now that they have to smoke somewhere else outside the campus.  The idea is that if you make smoking less convenient for smokers it will be less encouraging for them to smoke. This technique is usually enforced by placing campus authorities in designated areas where students usually smoke to make sure that the policy on smoking is properly implemented.

Quit Smoking Classes

It was the Florida State University that first implemented the Quit Smoking Now program in their campus and it is now being adopted in various colleges in Florida. The program aims to help students quit the habit of smoking by attending regular quit smoking classes. These special classes enable and encourage students to quit smoking by giving them different tips and techniques. Students in these classes can choose the quit smoking technique that is right for them. This program has greatly reduced the number of campus smokers and continues to help students quit smoking for good.

Smoke Free Dormitories

A study revealed that restricting smoking in dormitories helps prevent students from picking the habit of smoking and discourage those who smoke from lighting up. The idea is similar to that of a smoke-free campus where students are prohibited to smoke within and near the premises of their dormitory. Maybe the only downside of this technique is that smokers who won’t give up smoking would rather choose other dormitories. Nonetheless, this program can be very effective in helping smokers who want to quit and reduce casual smoking.

Student Advocacy Groups

Student advocacy groups are also effective in encouraging students to quit smoking. These groups normally organize and hold regular events to discourage students from smoking. Colleges in Washington used similar programs and have found success in cutting the number of smokers in their campuses. This technique uses peer pressure in a positive way where student advocacy groups tell students that it is not cool to smoke.

The Great American Smokeout

This is an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society which includes several events aimed to encourage college students to quit smoking in exchange of gift cards, restaurant coupons and other forms of enticements. The program was intended originally to smokers regardless of their age or status. It only become popular among college students as different educational institutions recognize that need for such program to help reduce smoking in colleges.
