Babies Sleep Safest On Their Backs.

The safest practice is to place babies on their backs to sleep.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby younger than one year. SIDS is also known as “crib death” because babies who die of SIDS are found in their cribs.

You may ask what does this have to do with smoking? The MAIN risk factor for SIDS is smoking.

The practice of placing babies on their backs to sleep has decreased the rate of SIDS by more than 50 percent.

Exposure of babies to tobacco smoke before or after birth increases the risk of SIDS.

The greater the exposure the higher the risk of death.

Bottom line: Don’t smoke if you are pregnant and don’t smoke around babies.
