If you asked Dr. M. what is radon?
Dr M would say that radon is a radioactive, colorless, odorless gas that occurs as a byproduct of uranium decay. (Uranium is the stuff that gives nuclear bombs their explosive personalities). Radon therefore is radioactive and considered a very serious health hazard.
So Dr. M what does radon have to do with me and my home?
Well it just so happens that in every home there is some level of radon detected. Dr. M. would tell you that the average radon concentration in the indoor air of America’s homes is about 1.3 pCi/L (pico Curies per Liter).
So what Dr. M?
Dr. M would answer that radon has been directly liked to lung cancer and that based on that average of 1.3 pCi/L in the homes that radon will cause 20,000 Americans to die of lung cancer.
These are deaths cause by radon exposure alone. And further more there are NO safe levels of radon exposure. The only safe level of radon is ZERO.
However in people who smoke and who breath second-hand smoke the effects of smoking and radon is like mixing gasoline and fire. A TON of more people in the homes of smoker’s will develop lung cancer.
Here is the take home message:
Put another way, a person who never smoked (never smoker) who is exposed to 1.3 pCi/L has a 2 in 1,000 chance of lung cancer; while a smoker has a 20 in 1,000 chance of dying from lung cancer.
There you have it another reason to not expose your children and spouse to smoke and why you should not smoke either.
