Up to 50 percent of people who use the nicotine patch develop a localized skin rash. Treatment with hydrocortisone cream and rotating the location of the patch site may help with this problem.
However, pregnant smokers should quit smoking without medication. Particularly they should quit with out nicotine patches. The nicotine patch is an FDA pregnancy class D agent. (See explanation of pregnancy classes here ). Furthermore the patch has NOT been shown to work with pregnant patients. It is probably not safe to use the patch while breastfeeding either.
