Addiction to Smoking Cigarettes: 5 Surprising Facts

You may be a chain smoker for far too long and yet you don’t even know the most important facts associated with your addiction to smoking cigarettes. Yes, you might be well acquainted with mainstream knowledge such as cigarette smoking is bad for your lungs and overall health, and that it is not only an issue for smokers but for nonsmokers, as well (regarding secondhand smoke).

But are you knowledgeable on other, more surprising facts about smoking? Do you even have an inkling on the substances that comprise a cigarette? Let us find out just five of these surprising facts, and you will know how very inadequately informed you are.

First, did you know that cigarettes contain arsenic, lead, hydrogen cyanide, ammonia, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and forty or so other carcinogens? I know. These chemical compounds probably sound as foreign to you as they are for anyone not scientifically inclined, but we do know that with these chemicals being consumed, it is not a shock then that the lives of smokers become significantly shortened.

Second, did you know that most cancer cases are actually associated with smoking cigarettes? In fact, a third of all cancer cases as well as ninety percent of all lung cancer cases are caused, whether directly or indirectly, by smoking. If you are not aware of this alarming statistics, perhaps it is time you are made aware of the gravity of the adverse effects brought about by smoking.

Third, did you know that a certain chemical compound which is a component of urine is being used to add flavor to cigarettes? If you didn’t, well, you do now. That chemical compound is called urea. So unless you fancy breathing in a substance quite similar to your own urine, you might want to seriously consider quitting.

Fourth, did you know that researches show that cigarette smoking makes the average smoker cut down on his lifespan by fourteen years? I’m sure you’re aware that smoking shortens life, but are you even aware of the length in years your life is being shortened to? That is already more than a decade, and so much can still be done even within a decade.

Fifth and finally, did you know that nicotine, the addictive component in cigarettes and the substance being produced when smoking, reaches the brain within ten seconds after the smoke is inhaled? Just imagine what potential hazards your brain will be exposed to because of smoking. And also, if that rapid rate in smoke diffusion doesn’t bother you, I’m pretty sure the people surrounding you are. If you have a death wish, please be more considerate and remain in places where there are no people. But then again, there are no places devoid of people (Antarctica maybe?) so that alone should already push you to quit. Think of the welfare of others if you can’t think of your own.

There certainly are other surprising facts regarding cigarettes, some of them probably still in the process of being discovered. But one thing is for sure; that smoking is an alarming and life-shortening addiction.
