You need not tell a smoker that tobacco use is causing damage to their health. They definitely know it. They have taken health class too. But if you love someone who is addicted to cigarettes, chances are you have tried several times to convince him or her to quit, not just for your loved one’s health but also for the health of everyone else around you.

So how do you encourage a smoker to quit if he or she is not threatened by lung cancer, heart disease and all the other health effects of cigarettes? Suggest the following reasons:


If your loved one smoke…


They will get weaker, literally. Smoking reduces blood circulation in the body so insufficient amount of oxygen and nutrients are delivered to different body organs. If your loved one is a sport enthusiast or wants to lose weight, tell him or her that quitting smoking can significantly improve their aerobic capacity, allowing them to endure harder forms of exercise.


Their future kids will smoke too. Your loved one may not realize the value of quitting smoking until he or she becomes a parent. They are consuming more nicotine than they think. Levels of nicotine in tobacco have increased by 11 percent between 1997 and 2005, according to the investigation conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health. If your loved one is smoking “light cigarettes”, the more nicotine he or she gets to inhale. Because of the mild taste of light cigarettes, smokers tend to pull harder when smoking, so they are able to take in more nicotine than if they will smoke regular cigarettes.

They are losing $350,000 in savings. Suppose one packet of cigarette costs $8, your loved one must be spending $2,922 per year killing his or herself! If they simply start saving that money (perhaps putting it in a bank account or a retirement portfolio), they would have saved $358,602 by the time they reach 65, according to the American Cancer Society.

They are living behind deadly cigarette stain. Maybe they know about second hand smoke. But did they ever hear about third hand smoke? This refers to the toxins left behind on surfaces long after the person has left that area. The worse thing is that third hand smoke doesn’t get away over time. Moreover it resists normal cleaning. Third hand smoke is more harmful than what you think. Recent studies suggest that it causes DNA damage more than previously thought. In fact, some of the toxins found in this smoke are some of the most potent carcinogens there are.

Giving your loved one more reasons to quit smoking can greatly increase his or her chances of ditching the habit for good.
